Identification: Know What You Are Dealing With

Not all stinging insects behave the same way. Identifying the species is the first step to safe removal.

• Yellow Jackets — Highly aggressive and defensive. Notorious for building nests in voids (soffits, behind brick weeping holes, underground). Over-the-counter sprays rarely reach the queen.
• Bald-Faced Hornets — Large, black-and-white stinging insects. Build large, gray, paper-like football-shaped nests, typically hanging high in trees or under soffits. Extremely aggressive.
• Paper Wasps — Build smaller, umbrella-shaped nests with exposed comb. Found under soffits, deck railings, or door frames. Less aggressive but will sting if cornered.
• Mud Daubers — Solitary wasps that build small, cylindrical mud tubes on brick walls. Generally docile and rarely sting.
